UTE, Iowa -- Carl Joseph "Joe" Hansen, 69, of Ute passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa, with the Revs. Kurt Kaiser and David Sewing of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Sloan Cemetery, Sloan, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605, both of Ute. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6 p.m., at the funeral home.

Joe was born April 22, 1934, in Little Sioux, Iowa, the son of Wilburn A. and Anne (Seaton) Hansen. At an early age he was taken in and raised by his maternal grandmother, Josie Mathison. He was raised in the Soldier, Moorhead and Dunlap, Iowa, areas and attended various schools. He graduated from Onawa High School in 1952. He was an outstanding athlete during his school years and participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He lettered four years in all four sports. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed Hawkeye football and basketball.
In 1952 he joined the U.S. Navy and was in the Seabees, operating heavy duty equipment at various stations during the Korean conflict. After returning from military service, he attended Morningside College and played football on an athletic scholarship.

He married Rosemary Godsey on March 31, 1957, at United Congregational Church in Sloan. In 1961 he was employed as a lineman for Northwest Iowa Telephone in Sloan, and a year later the couple moved to Odebolt, Iowa, where he worked for Sac County Mutual Telephone Co. In 1966 he was made manager of the telephone company in Stanhope, Iowa. From there he managed the telephone company in Wall Lake, Iowa. The last 20 years he was a manager at Jordan Soldier Valley Telephone Company in Soldier, Iowa. During his career, he was active in both ITA and Riita Telephone Associations. He was always ready to help other exchanges during cut overs and storms when getting service restored was a priority.

He enjoyed his many good and lasting friendships during his working years and enjoyed a 40-year career at his retirement in 1998. Since retiring, he had enjoyed breakfasts at the B&B in Mapleton, Iowa, and playing golf at Willow Vale. He also loved to hunt and fish, hunt mushrooms and telling "roonie" hunting stories and teaching the kids to enjoy the outdoors. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Rosemary; three sons, Craig Hansen and his wife, Robin of Keota, Iowa, Brian Hansen of Schleswig, Iowa, and Todd Hansen and his wife, Laurie of Arion, Iowa; a daughter, Valerie Hansen of Independence, Mo.; five grandchildren, Carrie and her husband, Lee Sypherd of Harper, Iowa, Andrew Joseph Hansen of Keota, Bethany Hansen of Iowa City, Iowa, and Katie and Jackie Hansen of Arion; two great-grandchildren, Tristan and Cecil Sypherd; a sister, Margery Scott of Sioux City; two half brothers, Robert Hansen and his wife, Carolyn of Onawa, and Roger Hansen of Little Sioux; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Josie Mathison; a brother and his wife, Bill and Motsue; a brother-in-law, Burnell Scott; and a nephew, Jeff Hansen.

Joe was greatly loved by his family and will be missed.
