Soldier, Iowa-- Claire Orlando Sandvold, 84, of Soldier passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jack Torgersen officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Claire was born August 27, 1918, the son of Hans Oscar and Caroline (Rude) Sandvold, on the family farm three miles south of Soldier. He was baptized into Christ's body (the church) on October 13, 1918, at Soldier Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed in the faith on Nov. 25, 1934. He attended Soldier Public School. He owned and operated a trucking business for a number of years.

On June 29, 1946, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Carritt. In 1948, he moved with his family to a farm southwest of Soldier, where he was presently residing. He farmed in partnership with his father, H.O. and his brother, Olaf. He retired from farming in 1983. Betty passed away from cancer on March 2, 1999, at the farm.

He was a lifelong member of Soldier Lutheran Church and served on the church council, Soldier School board, the Telephone board and was a trustee of Jordan Township. He loved farming and feeding cattle. His greatest joy in life was his family, to which he was greatly devoted.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Rita and Lawrence "Babe" Kohlscheen of Avoca, Iowa; a son and his wife, Charles and Ellen of Soldier; four grandchildren, Brett Charles and his wife, Amanda of Soldier, Caroline Grace Kohlscheen, Wendy Marie Sandvold and Kysa Lynn Kohlscheen; a great-grandson, Ethan Lawrence Sandvold; two brothers and their wives, Olaf and Vivian of Moorhead, Iowa and Norris and Delores of Honolulu, Hawaii; two sisters, Opal Folsom of Onawa, Iowa and Joyce and her husband, Jerry Leaf of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers-in-law, Lyle Carritt of Soldier and Gordon Carritt and his wife, Lillian of Ute, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lavonne Shull.
