ONAWA, Iowa -- Gladys I. Phipps, 80, of Onawa died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. today at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Dennis Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery, Turin, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Gladys was born June 26, 1922, near Soldier, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Grace (Riley) Leisinger. She attended school in Castana, Iowa.
She married Earl Phipps on Dec. 20, 1938, in Onawa. She was a devoted farm wife, working alongside her husband for nearly 40 years in the Onawa area. The couple made their home in Onawa, where she worked at Fords Apparel for five years, then owned and operated the store for 11 years. Earl passed away Feb. 13, 1982, in Onawa.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Becky Wakehouse and her fiance, Fred Russell of Onawa, Kathy Shelton and her fiance, Dutch Revenboer, of Edmond, Okla., and Dona and her husband, Don Kelly, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a son and his wife, Gary and Lenore Phipps of Blencoe, Iowa; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon "Pete Leisinger and his wife, Mariann, of Moville, Iowa, and Fred Leisinger of Mapleton, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Raymond Archer of Onawa and Dona and Marvin Larson of Ute, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Dean Kohler of Paola, Kan.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Darlene Wacheldorf and Norma Kohler; and a son-in-law, Gary Wakehouse.
