MAPLETON, Iowa -- Anna M. Klanderud, 104, of Mapleton, formerly of Wynot, Neb., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Graveside services will be in Wynot Cemetery at Wynot, Neb. Visitation will be after 2 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Anna Margaret Klanderud, the daughter of Lewis and Stena (Beyschau) Nygaard, was born July 22, 1898, at St. James, Neb. She graduated from Wynot High School and attended Wayne State Teachers College where she attained her teaching certificate and taught rural school for several years. Anna was baptized and a member of Wynot Methodist Church and was very active in the Ladies Aid.
She married Carl Klanderud June 2, 1920 in Wynot. They farmed on her grandfather's farm southwest of Wynot which was homesteaded in a program by planting trees called Timberclaim. The couple farmed over 40 years in the Wynot area, retiring in 1962 and moving into Wynot.

Anna's husband, Carl passed away in August of 1972 and she moved to Mapleton in 1978 to be near her daughters. Anna was able to remain living in her home until the age of 101 when she entered Maple Heights Nursing Home on Feb. 2, 2000.

After moving to Mapleton, Anna joined St. John's United Methodist Church and the UMW, where she was very active. She was also a member of the Jolly 16 Club and the Royal Neighbors of America. Her hobbies were crocheting doilies and afghans, gardening and canning. She was a volunteer in a group at Maple Heights Nursing Home known as the Busy Bees. In later years, she enjoyed spending days with her family. Her previous joy is that which is found in her six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Klanderud and Marguerite Nelson and her husband, Lawrence, all of Mapleton; a son, Lewis Klanderud and his wife, Lucille of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Mabel Thompson of Yankton, S.D., who will be 102 in February; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and cherished friends.

Along with her husband and parents, Anna was preceded in death by an infant grandson; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Pallbearers will be Anna's grandsons.
