30 December 1971Fred E. Neff was born April 2, 1891 at Castana, Iowa the son of Hiram and Fannie Smith. He passed away on December 12, 1971 at the Sloan Nursing Home, Sloan, Iowa having reached the age of 80 years, 8 months and 13 days.
He was a veteran of World War I where he served in the U.S. Army and had been a farmer for most of his life.
Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Christensen of Madison, Tenn. and Edith Durland of LaMesa, Calif., nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. May Myers, Mrs. Minnie Bliss and Mrs. Mercedes Holmes and one brother, Charles.
The funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 15 at the Pearson Funeral Chapel. Rev. William C. Bessmer officiated, Evan Davies sang "Sunset and Evening Star", accompanied by Mrs. Davies. The Grimsley-Thayor Post No. 502, American Legion of Castana conducted Military Rites at the cemetery and Arvid Erlandson, Harold Baker, Wayne Mann, Allen Jordan, L.W. Baker and Doris Martin served as bearers. INterment was in the Kennebec cemetery at Castana.
