Arthur Laverne Baker was born January 9, 1890 in Kit Carson County, Colorado, a son of William and Myra Baker and passed from this life at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa on Wednesday, December 8, 1971 at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 29 days. He had been in failing health for several weeks.

Mr. Baker had lived in the Whiting community since a small boy and through-out his lifetime engaged in farming.

He was united in marriage to Iva Karch on August 31, 1913 at the Christian Church Parsonage in Onawa. He was a member of the church of Christ in Whiting.

Mr Baker loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed gardening and raising of flowers.
He is survived by his widow, Iva; one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Della) Peterson of Sioux City, Iowa; one son Donald of Whiting. Four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Bertha Kirk of Onawa, four brothers, Elmer, Jess and Raymond Baker all of Onawa and Floyd Baker of Whiting.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Bernice and a son, Harold Wayne.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 1971 at the Church of Christ, Whiting, Iowa with the Rev. Richard Lankford officiating. Mrs. DOnald Peterson was the vocalist and was accompanied by Mrs. Carl Linden. Casket bearers were Steven Seward, Alton Morton, Donnie Anderson, C.W. Durr, Lloyd Fiscus and Gary Sherrill. Interment was in Harrison Cemetery near Whiting with arrangements by the Wood Funeral Home.
