9 March 1972Harley G. Payne, a resident of Onawa for the past three years, passed away at the SIoux City Hospital on Sunday, February 20, 1972. Death came following a brief hospitalization.
Mr. Payne was born May 14, 1901 at Castana, Iowa. Before coming to Onawa, his home had been at Castana and Mapleton. He had been a farmer all his life until his retirement several years ago.
He was united in marriage to Violet VanCleave in February 19, 1932. His survivors include one son, Dean Payne of Castana, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Keith (Twila) Oregon of Mapleton, Iowa; one step-daughter, Mrs. Betty Jacoby, two stepsons, Clarence Burkhart, Jr. and Francis Burkhart, all of Mapleton, eighteen grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Warren Livengood of SIoux City, and Miss Gretchen Payne of Sima, Calif and one brother, Norris Payne in Arizona.
Services were held at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, Iowa on Wednesday, February 23, 1972 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Everett Epperson officiating. Clara Kelley was the organist.
Bearers were Frank Burkhart, Russell Miller, Herbert McCall, Raymond Horner, Joseph Jessen and Arthur Messick. Interment was in the Holly Spring's Cemetery, Holy Springs, Iowa with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
