ONAWA, Iowa -- Virginia N. Carlson, 79, of Onawa, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Burgess Health Center due to multiple health problems.

Virginia Nel was born Oct. 15, 1927, to Nel and Violet Thompson of rural Soldier, Iowa. She was baptized into Christ in her early teens at the Moorhead Christian Church, Moorhead, Iowa, She graduated from Soldier High School in 1944. She married Leo Warren Carlson on Jan. 14, 1947, at First Christian Church in Onawa by the Rev. Everett Epperson.
Virginia was an active member of that church for 58 years, serving for many years as Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher, missions director, Bible study leader, choir member and willing worker wherever needed. She loved her church family greatly. Virginia was as exceptional mother and grandmother, and her family honors her deeply.

Last week Virginia was celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary with her husband and five children. This week she's the guest of honor at a welcome home party in heaven. To say "she's dead" isn't really accurate, for she's never been more alive than she is now. She lived her life to please her Lord and now she's rejoicing in His presence. Her family's sorrow is overshadowed by the joy they feel at her graduation to eternal life.

Survivors include her husband, Leo W. Carlson of Onawa; five children and their spouses, Rick and Myra Carlson of Lee's Summit, Mo., Linda and Thomas Wicks of Bettendorf, Iowa, Randy and Donna Carlson of Lee's Summit, Mo., Roger and Teresa Carlson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Rustin and Laura Carlson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carol Dose of Mapleton, Iowa, Colleen Vohn of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Dolores Leonard of Holstein, Iowa, and a brother, Elmer Thompson of Branson Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a half-brother, Frank Voss of Lincoln, Neb.; and a half-sister, Emma Theis of Dunlap, Iowa.

Pallbearers will be six of her grandsons: Ryan Carlson, Spencer Wicks, Tyler Wicks, Nathan Carlson, Nicolas Carlson and Josiah Carlson.
