CASTANA, Iowa -- Cleo R. Melby, 82, of Castana, formerly of Soldier, Iowa, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jack Torgersen officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery in rural Castana. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 8 p.m., at Soldier Lutheran Church. Rush Family Care Service of Onawa is in charge of arrangements.

Cleo was born Feb. 6, 1920, near Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Johnny and Sadie (Nelson) Melby. He attended Moorhead School.

He married Marjorie V. Karr Nov. 25, 1939, at Logan, Iowa. The couple farmed at Soldier and then moved to Castana in 1952, where they farmed until retiring in 1985. Marjorie passed away May 5, 1994, at Castana.

Cleo was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Eugene and Shirley, Roger and Sharon and Russell and Cindy, all of Castana; two daughters and their husbands, Janet and Dennis Nelson of Onawa, and Janice and Terry Payne of Woolridge, Mo.; a brother and his wife, Milton and Bernetta Melby of Soldier; two sisters, LaVern Rustin of Moorhead, and Delores and her husband, Morris Rustin of Whiting, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Ronnie Davis; two brothers, Howard and Glen; and two sisters, Corine and Ruby Delores.
