TURIN, Iowa -- Syril Vinton Brown, 78, of rural Turin died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at his son's residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery, near Turin. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Mr. Brown was born June 26, 1923, in Belvidere Township near Turin, the son of Claude and Nettie (Jensen) Brown. He graduated from Castana (Iowa) High School in 1940, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1942. He was a corporal in Battery A, 977th Anti-Artillery, Automatic Weapon Battalion based in Iceland. Following his discharge in November 1945, Syril returned to the family farm.

He married Mardelle Oatman on June 27, 1958, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Syril fed, sold and bought livestock for more than 60 years.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, American Legion and the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Christy Brown of Denver, Colo., and Faye Brown of Danbury, Iowa; three sons, Todd, Jeff and Dave, all of Turin; four grandchildren, Travis, Ashlee and Mollie Mauch of Danbury, and Adam Brown of Turin; three sisters, Opal and her husband, Gunnar Dahlberg of Omaha, Virgie Young of Seattle, Wash., and Bernice and her husband, Charles Riley of Castana, Iowa; a brother, Dale Brown of Palisade, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce and Don Brown; three sisters, Iila Brown, Pat Ehlers and Garnet Brown; and an infant brother.
