MAPLETON, Iowa -- Robert L. Fitzpatrick, 77, of Mapleton died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Robert Laurence Fitzpatrick was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Danbury, the son of John and Ethel (Towers) Fitzpatrick. He grew up in the area and attended St. Patrick's Academy in Danbury. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, Bob returned to Danbury, where he owned and operated Bob's Place for a number of years. He also worked construction and farmed for many years in the Mapleton and Danbury area.

On Feb. 14, 1974, Bob married Betty Negless in Mapleton, where they made their home. Betty died May 23, 1995.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 in Mapleton.

Survivors include a sister, Bernice Treiber of Danbury; a brother and his wife, Norman and Vivian Fitzpatrick of Waterloo, Iowa; a stepdaughter and her husband, Shirley and Lynn Patrick of Earlville, Iowa; a stepson, Terry Negless; three stepgrandchildren and their spouses, Cheryl and Marcus Dryak of Omaha, Shannon and Michael Immer and Kristi and Charlie Mertens, all of Fargo, N.D.; six great-stepgrandchildren; along with several other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Along with his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Francene Treiber, Pauline Uhl and Helen Langdon; and two brothers, Ronald and Daniel Fitzpatrick.
