CASTANA, Iowa -- Gerald "Lefty" Grant, 68, of Castana died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Castana Community Church, with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery, near Castana. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Gerald LeRoy "Lefty" Grant was born Sept. 20, 1933, in Soldier, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Maxine (Young) Grant. He grew up in the Soldier area and graduated from Soldier High School with the class of 1951.

On April 28, 1954, Lefty was united in marriage to Evelyn McDermott in Ute, Iowa. The couple made their home and raised their children in Castana. Lefty worked for E.W. McCall and Tim Bruning.

He was a member of Boyer Valley Coon Hunting Association. He enjoyed the time he could spend hunting, fishing and playing cards. However, his greatest pleasure was found in his family and friends.

Those survivors left to cherish the memory of Lefty include Evelyn, his wife of 47 years; five sons, Harold "Fudd" Grant of Ida Grove, Iowa, Melvin "Barney" Grant and his friend, Kay Mauch, of Castana, Donald Grant and his wife, Becky, of Turin, Iowa, John Grant and his wife, April, of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Billy Grant and his wife, Dawn of Sentinal, Texas; two daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Jim Kinney of Le Mars, Iowa, and Shelia and John Pitts of Porte Vedra Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Gale and Jenita Grant of Soldier; three sisters, Jane Holt and her husband, Stanley, of Soldier, Karen Soukup and her husband, Gene, of Ute and Janette Kelly and her friend, Al, of Masadonia, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors.

Lefty was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Raymond and Beulah (Jerman) McDermott; two brothers, Jim and Kenneth Grant; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Marsha Grant Jr.; and three grandchildren, Tiffany Grant and Jimmy and Mark Kinney.
