MAPLETON, Iowa - Ned Edward Perrin, 90, of Mapleton died suddenly Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Castana, Iowa, with flag presentation by American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Perrin was born March 10, 1911, near Castana, the son of Chester M. and Frances (Masters) Perrin. He graduated from Castana High School in 1928, and from Iowa State University in 1933. He married Evelyn Kidd on June 17, 1933, in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

He worked as a civil engineer for the CCC from 1933 to 1934, and in 1936. He later worked for the Soil Conservation Service from 1946 to 1948. He received recognitions from the county and state soil conservation committees. He began farming near Mapleton in 1935.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 as a cryptographer and served in combat in the Pacific Theater.

In 1954 his family was honored by WOW-TV as the farm family of the week. In 1956 Wallace's Farmer named him to be an Iowa Master Farmer. He went on to be a panelist writing for the magazine's "Timely Tips" column for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau, serving many times as a delegate to state and national conventions and from which he received the "Distinguished Service to Iowa Agriculture Award" in 1981. He received 4-H recognition award from both state and national extension groups.

He served on the Castana School Board for 12 years. He served on the Iowa Board of Regents from 1973 to 1981, on the Iowa State University Achievement Fund Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1979, and received recognition from the Gamma Sigma Delta and Epsilon Sigma Phi. He served on the board of directors for the Castana Community Church, St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Fisher Whiting Memorial Library and also the Valley Bank and Trust Board where he served for 32 years. He also served on the county planning and zoning board and the Mapleton planning and zoning committee.

He was a member of American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, DiAnn and Lyle Rose of Mapleton; a son and his wife, Richard and Lilyan Perrin of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; four sisters, Alice Todd, Gertrude Barry, Louise Valentine, and Esther in infancy.
