Alice M. Steward

ONAWA, Iowa - Alice Mary Steward, 80, of Onawa died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, with the Rev. Steven C. Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in Onawa City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Steward was born July 17, 1920, in Little Sioux, Iowa, the daughter of William Lauren and Cynthia Ese (Torrance) Rowe. She attended school in Little Sioux. She was employed at a day care center in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

She married Cary J. Steward on Feb. 9, 1942, in Dakota City. The couple lived in the Soldier and Moorhead, Iowa area, where she was a housekeeper for Howard McCall. They moved to Onawa in 1947. Her husband died Oct. 17, 1998, in Onawa.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary in Onawa and a former member of the Sunshine Birthday Club. She enjoyed sewing.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, June E. and Allen Merritt of Onawa; a son, Roger of Carter Lake, Iowa; five grandchildren, Thomas, Gerry and Steve Sorensen, Adam Steward and Melanie Milledge; seven stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nine great-stepgrandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Lyela, and Ed Nuzum of Truesdale, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Clarence Rowe; two sisters, Della Arlene Hilton and Edith in infancy; and a stepgranddaughter, Eugenia Schovanec.
