Castana, Iowa--Opal A. Christie, 83, of Quitman, Texas, formely of Castana, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Kurt Seboe officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

Opal Agnes Christie was born Nov.19, 1919, in Castana, the daughter of George and Ruth Lillian (Gallup) Ultsch. She grew up in the area and was one of the first graduates from Castana High School, graduating with her sister, Illa.

She was united in marriage to Leonard LeRoy Christie on Nov. 4, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz. The couple made their home in Sioux City. She enrolled in the Ellis School of Cosmetology, completing the course on July 7, 1949. The family moved to Burbank, Calif. in 1968. Leonard passed away Nov. 11, 1989 in Burbank and is interred at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. She moved to Quitman, Texas, in 2000.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Michael and Brenda Christie of Alba, Texas; a grandson and his wife, Chad and Lorena Christie of Lomita, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Staci of LaCosta, Texas.

Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Illa Kendall.
