ONAWA, Iowa -- Audrey R. Martindale, 85, of Onawa died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Arley Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Audrey was born Jan. 20, 1922, to Jesse and Hattie (Davis) Chedester, at the family farm near Soldier, Iowa. In 1939, she graduated from Soldier High School, then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she received her teaching certificate. In 1973, she received her bachelor of arts degree from Morningside College in Sioux City. She taught school for 35 years at Sunnyside School, Turin Little Sioux-West Harrison and Castana-Maple Valley schools. Through much of this time, she worked as a CNA at both the old and new hospitals in Onawa, as well as the Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

On Dec. 28, 1942, she was united in marriage to Clemens Arthur Martindale at the family farm near Soldier. To this union were three children, Jeanette, Norman and Joyce.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her favorite pastime or pleaser was embroidering, which she was taught early on by her grandmother and enjoyed passing that along to her school kids as well. She also enjoyed making quilts for family and friends. In the summer months, you would find her taking care of her flower and vegetable gardens.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanette and her husband, James West of Omaha and Joyce Reach of Omaha; five grandchildren, Tami West Stratton of Overland Park, Kan., Troy West of Omaha, Randy Martindale of Story City, Iowa, Jeffrey Martindale of Felton, Del., and Stacy Martindale of Omaha; five great-grandchildren, Matthew Stratton, Alexandra Stratton, Nicholas Stratton, Madison Martindale and Logan Strazdas; two sisters, Hazel and her husband, Howard Pohlman of Ute, Iowa, and Mrs. Shirley Buter of Anderson Island, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clemens Martindale in 1983; her son, Norman Martindale; a brother, Roland; and four sisters, Lola Chedester, Marjorie King, Lois Gallagher and Joan Chamberlain.
