CASTANA, Iowa -- Gwen E. Dobrovolny, 60, of Los Angeles, Calif., formerly of Castana, passed away July 27, 2007, in Los Angeles.

Memorial services were held Aug. 3 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Gwen was born Nov. 9, 1946, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the daughter of Norma Jean (Bouslaugh) and Les Dobrovolny. She was raised in her family farm in Castana. She graduated from West Monona High School in Onawa, Iowa, in 1964. She attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. After college, she moved to Los Angeles and began her long career in commercial finance. Her last position was at CIT in Los Angeles until poor health forced her early retirement.

She was a member of the West Monona's girls basketball team that won state honors in 1964. She became a member of the Girl's All State team that year. She was one of the original members of the Santa Monica Red Hat Seaside Broads and very much enjoyed being a Red Hatter. She also enjoyed reading, crafts and her family and friends. She had a smile and a belly laugh that was infectious.

She is survived by a brother and his wife, Bruce and Kari Dobrovolny of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Janet and John Noe of Allen, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Lynette Dobrovolny of Mapleton, Iowa; an aunt and uncle, Mildred and John Elias of Woodland Hills, Calif.; an aunt, Janette Dougherty of Grand Island, Neb.; her stepmother, Phyllis Dobrovolny of Castana; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Tom Dobrovolny.

The family requests that memorials be given to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA. 22312, in Gwen's name.
