CASTANA, Iowa -- Ernest "Hickory" Nutt, of Castana died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Castana Community United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Ernest Harold "Hickory" Nutt was born Jan. 12, 1913, near Castana, the son of Robert V. and Bettie A. (McCall) Nutt. After graduating from Castana High School in 1932, he continued to live his entire life in the Castana community.

On March 6, 1933, he was united in marriage to Ethel Ann Nielsen on Ponca, Neb. The couple began farming in 1937 three miles south of Castana until 2005, when he entered the nursing home. In the 1950s, he also worked on the watersheds and operated draglines and Caterpillars.

He was a member of Castana Community United Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Ethel; a son and his wife, Harold "Harry" and Marge Nutt of Castana; two daughters and their husbands, Maxine and Gary Thies of Mapleton, Iowa, and Karen and Melvin Houchens of Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Eileen and Don Reed of Turin, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Roger and Jerry Nutt; a son-in-law, Maurice J. "Sonny" Jensen Jr.; two brothers, William F. and Robert E. Nutt; a sister, Louise Villeneuve; and a nephew, Donald Villeneuve
