ONAWA, Iowa -- Charles W. Carrier, 88, of Onawa died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with Pastor Arley Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force and Monona County VFW Post 2694. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Charles was born April 12, 1919, in rural Onawa, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Emma (Weidt) Carrier. He was raised in the Onawa area and graduated from Onawa High School. He moved to Santa Monica, Calif., and worked assembly at Douglas Aircraft.

Charles married Martha Martin on Aug. 28, 1942, in Omaha, before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, where he served in the Western Pacific Theater. After his discharge, the couple returned to Onawa and farmed until 1952. The family then moved to Whittier, Calif., where Charles was a machinist. In 1959, they moved to Modale, Iowa, where Charles owned and operated a dairy farm until 1965. The couple then moved to rural Onawa. Martha died July 9, 1989 at Sioux City.

Charles married Virginia Davis on July 26, 1991 at Turin, Iowa, and the couple made their home in Onawa.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Onawa; five sons, John of Onawa, Leslie (Norma) of Pender, Neb., Randy (Elizabeth) of Regenstauf, Germany, Allen (Debbie) of Onawa, Dennis (Myra) of Sioux City; a daughter, Janice (Jack) Peterson of Missouri Valley, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Scott Carrier, Jody Malcom, Margaret, Matthew, Shawn Carrier, Patty Gross, Stewart Peterson, Julie, Nicole, Christian, Brandi, Chad and Whitney Carrier; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Walter Carrier of Onawa.

In addition to his first wife, Martha, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; a daughter-in-law, Jenna Kay Carrier; a granddaughter, Debbie Reed; a brother, Robert; and two sisters, Esther Kratz and Hazel DeBauche.
