Ruby Helen Weikel
MAPLETON, Iowa -- Ruby Helen Weikel, 95, of Mapleton died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, surrounded by her family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Ruby was born on a farm near Castana, Iowa, on Dec. 1, 1911, the daughter of Joseph and Mary "Mamie" (Price) Folsom. The family moved to Minnesota for a short time before returning to Onawa, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at First Christian Church in Onawa. She graduated in 1929, a member of the first graduating class from the new Onawa High School. She passed the Iowa Teachers exam with high scores, but because she was not yet old enough for a teaching certificate, she worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company after graduation.

In 1931, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Weikel in Sioux Center, Iowa. After several years of following his road construction jobs in Nebraska, they lived in the Onawa area. In 1942, they moved to a farm near Hornick, Iowa. In 1951, they moved to a farm near Mapleton. In 1974 upon Lloyd's retirement from farming, they moved into Mapleton. Lloyd passed away in January 1994. She continued to live in their home until moving to an apartment this June.

She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and Women's Society of Christian Services. She was a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Mapleton Chapter 300. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star Queen Esther Chapter in Onawa. For years, she spent many hours visiting and sewing for the residents of the nursing home. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting, often giving away her handwork. She was known for her peach pies and she baked and tried new recipes throughout her life. She loved reading, having been taught by her mother before she began school. She was always interested in the news and in learning new things.

Survivors include three sons, Lyle of Mapleton, Rex and his wife, Beverly of Sloan, Iowa, and Gary and his wife, Valerie of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Marlene and Victor Siglin of Hernando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Folsom of Onawa and Rosellen Weikel of San Diego, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; a son, Wayne; a granddaughter, Cindy; a grandson, Brent; two daughters-in-law, Ruthanne and Linda; four brothers, Elmer, Edwin, Everett and Lawrence Folsom; and a sister, Mildred Gingles.
