SOLDIER, Iowa -- Janet Ione Ehlers, 73, of Soldier died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Carla Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Janet Ione was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Soldier, the daughter of Paul and Edith (Lyons) Vahler. She was raised in the Soldier area, where she attended school.

She and Virgil Ehlers were united in marriage on Jan. 23, 1951, in Mapleton, Iowa. They lived in Ohio and Mapleton for several years before relocating to Soldier in 1967. They established and are currently operating Ehlers Oil. She as employed at Kraft Clothing in Mapleton and 13 years at QAT & IKAN Telemarketing in Soldier.

She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Virgil of Soldier; her children and their spouses, Marlene and Dan Cooper of Mapleton, Jim and Jill Ehlers of Soldier, Rick and Joy Ehlers of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Cindy and Ron Holt of Soldier; 11 grandchildren, Heidi, Tracy, Christi, Laurie, Darcy, Jacob, Lacey, Kassi, Amy, Katie and Melanie; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Jo Jensen of Kansas City, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bruce; a granddaughter, Heather Cooper; and a brother-in-law, Russell Jensen.
