ONAWA, Iowa -- Howard E. Rogers, 85, of Onawa died Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a Scripture prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Howard was born July 22, 1922, in Pisgah, Iowa, the son of Robert and Ethel (Beckoff) Rogers. He was raised in the Pisgah area. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the European Theater.

He and Mary Ann Johnson were united in marriage on Feb. 2, 1948. They made their home and raised their children in Onawa. He was employed with Monona County REC for 40 years. He retired in 1986 as a line superintendent. Mary Ann died Dec. 12, 2001, in Sioux City.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars and Onawa Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends, driving to his old "stomping grounds" with Bert Hanson, sitting on his porch, mowing his lawn and any other lawn on Onawa in need of clipping.

Survivors include three sons, Larry of Onawa, David of Onawa and Robert and his fiancee, Monica Gossage of Whiting, Iowa; two daughters, Deb and her husband, Brett Ewing of Onawa and Regina Rogers of Onawa; six grandchildren, Christopher (Susan), Kimberly, Robert and Bradley Rogers, Angela (Kelly) Lyons and Kevin (Julie) Ewing; and three great-grandchildren, Skyler, Savannah and Seth.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Leo Rogers, Ann Hruska, Nellie Livingston, Blanche Wiltse, Harley Rogers, Frank Rogers, Kathryn McWilliams, Rudy Rogers and Bernard Rogers.
