SOLDIER, Iowa -- LaVonne Wade, 94, a lifelong resident of the Soldier community, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa, after a short stay.

Vera LaVonne Knutson and John T. Wade were united in marriage on Aug. 1, 1935, at Soldier Lutheran Church. John was the owner and operator of the Soldier Sentinel.

LaVonne was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, where she was active for many years in Ladies Aide and Circle.

Survivors include two daughters, Maureen Matthaidess Bacon (Ron) of Omaha, and Rebecca Abbas (Tom) of Waterloo, Iowa; four grandsons, Jeff Matthaidess of Omaha, Bradley Matthaidess (Terry) of Atlanta, Ga., Sean Abbas (Kim) of Waterloo, Iowa, and Benjamin Abbas (Emily) of Crystal Lake, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Austin, Kelsey, Cole, Cora and Lucy; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Knutson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sisters, Genevieve and as an infant, and Mary Francis; and three brothers, Park, Glen and Wyland.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jeff, Brad, Sean and Ben.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Soldier Lutheran Church or the Soldier Country Church.

Remember mother in her yard. She enjoyed her tulips, roses and especially the magnolia we gave her one Mother's Day. Of course, there were the dandelions, leaves, walnuts and the pesky blackbirds. Mom loved feeding the cardinals that came to her back porch and sang. She had a true pioneer spirit and appreciated the beauty of nature. We love you, Mother, and will miss our special times together. We will see you again in God's heavenly gardens. Maureen and Rebecca.
