Dayle E. Ellis

WHITING, Iowa -- Dayle E. Ellis, 84, of Whiting died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Emery Johnson Post 481. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus leading the rosary, at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Dayle was born May 16, 1923, at Neola, Iowa, the son of Howard and Bertha (White) Ellis. He attended school at Castana, Iowa. Dayle served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1944 to 1946.

Dayle and Darlene Stanislav were united in marriage on Jan. 9, 1947, at Onawa. The couple made their home in the Whiting area, where Dayle was a lifelong farmer. They had been wintering in Florida the past 33 years.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 2056 and American Legion Emery Johnson Post 481 of Whiting. He enjoyed woodworking on many projects and was a sports enthusiast, watching Astros baseball exhibition games in Florida and baseball on TV. He also followed his children's sports and was a scorekeeper for Whiting School for 17 years.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Whiting; three sons and their spouses, Mike and Lois of Onawa, Gary and Linda of Whiting, and Loren and Deb of Independence, Iowa; two daughters and their spouses, Annette and Vance Linden of Whiting, and Mary and Jim Parker of Sloan, Iowa; grandchildren, Scott, Phillip, Nicole Ellis, Amy and Dr. James Ellis, Tracy Hawthorne, Jenny Beatty, Michael and Michelle Ellis, Leslie, Paige and Reid Linden and Megan, Joanna and Mitchell Parker; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Emma Ellis, Megan, Katie and Luke Ellis and Ashton, Connel and Trevor Beatty; a sister, Lula Mander of Marshalltown, Iowa; and a brother, Howard Ellis of Akron, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marie Dudek, Mildred Bergstrom, Hazel Kratz, Loretta Johnson and Frances Dickinson; brothers, Charlie, Max, Harold and twin brothers, Don and Dean; and a granddaughter, Angie Ellis.
