MAPLETON, Iowa -- Charles Homer Banta, 67, of Gentry, Ark., formerly of Mapleton, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

Private services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs, Ark. Condolences may be sent online to www.wassonfuneralhome.com .

Born May 14, 1940, in Oto, Iowa, Charles Homer Banta was the son of George and Bertha (Rickman) Banta. He married Sandra Moore on Aug. 18, 1961, in Sioux City. He was a former police chief of the Mapleton Police Department.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra of the home; three sons, Kurtis Layne Banta of Gravette, Ark., Charles Kent Banta of Gentry, Ark., and Kevin Ray Banta of Gravette, Ark.; a daughter, Kimberly Jean Smith of Gravette; a brother, Merle Banta of Sioux City; three sisters, Ona Finzen of Sioux City, Betty Mook of Sioux City and Virginia Pike of Decatur, Ark.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two older brothers; and a nephew.
