WHITING, Iowa -- August T. Westergaard, 86, of Whiting died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Skien Lutheran Church, Albaton, Iowa (rural Sloan, Iowa), with the Rev. Lilette Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

August T. "Augie" Westergaard was born March 7, 1921, west of Whiting, in Monona County, Iowa, the son of Chris T. and Flora (Walther) Westergaard. He was raised in rural Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School with the class of 1939. He was a lifelong farmer and farmed in the Whiting and Sloan areas.

He and Carolyn Reese were united in marriage on June 11, 1950, in Onawa. They made their home and raised their four sons in rural Whiting and Sloan.

In addition to his love of farming, he enjoyed hunting with family and friends and had a lifelong interest in competitive rifle shooting. He began completing at an early age and developed into a world class marksman. He won numerous local, state, regional and national events. He represented the United States on several International World Championship and Pan-American teams and was an alternate on the U.S. Olympic Team in 1952. His shooting exploits took him to such far away places as England, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela and Argentina.

He also served as a coach and mentor to many area residents who became interested in shooting.

He was a member of Skien Lutheran Church, past chairman of McCandless-Cleghorn Drainage Ditch Board and served on the Monona County Conservation board, Farmers Cereal Co-op board and Whiting Community State Bank board. He also was a life member of the National Rifle Association and American Single Shot Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of Whiting; three sons, Lee and his wife, Vickie of Sloan, Iowa, James and his wife, Kathy of Mapleton, Iowa, and Mark and his special friend, Pam Laws of Whiting; six grandchildren, Allison Dirksen, Kristen Westergaard, Kelly Westergaard, Kari Stewart and David and Doug Westergaard; a great-granddaughter, Karissa Steging; and a sister, Marjorie McLarty of Kingsley, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kent; and two sisters, Annie Pohlman and Kathryn Behrens.

Memorials may be directed to the Burgess Hospital Foundation, Skien Lutheran Church and Monona County 4-H Foundation - Safety, Education, Shooting Sports.
