MAPLETON, Iowa - Paul "Pirk" Koenigs, 86, of Mapleton died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with honorary military rites by Loren Hollister Post 496 at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Born on Sept. 17, 1921, to John and Josie (Gaul) Koenigs in Mapleton, Paul Clifford Koenigs was a lifelong resident of Mapleton. He received his education there and was united in marriage to Bette J. Otto on Feb. 26, 1946, in his hometown. Pirk farmed in the Mapleton area for 32 years. He carried mail as a substitute carrier for 17 years and then as a regular rural route carrier for another 10 years, retiring in 1986. He served in World War II from June 1942 to November 1945, spending 15 months overseas. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Loren Hollister American Legion Post 496, and Rural Letter Carriers Association. He carried Meals on Wheels from Maple Heights as a volunteer for 15 years.

Pirk will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Bette; three sons and their wives, Dave and Kay of Mapleton, Don and Sheryl of Brandon, S.D., and Jerry and Carol of Mapleton; a daughter and her husband, Marla and Jack Seuntjens of Mapleton; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Raymond "Razor" and Lorraine Koenigs of Pella, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Shirley Koenigs of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Mary Kee, Loretta Otto, Catherine "Kitty" Dahms, Clara Conyers and Rose Urguhart; and a brother, Leonard Koenigs.
