Andrew B. Spaulding

Mapleton, Iowa--Andrew B. Spaulding, 17, of Elgin, Nebr., formerly of Mapleton, died from injuries suffered in a car accident on Saturday, September 15, 2007, near Elgin.

Services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday September 18 in the Elgin High School auditorium. Local services will be 2 p.m. today at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with Pastor Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Andrew Berdett Spaulding was born on May 3, 1990, in Onawa, Iowa to Gina Spaulding. He attended kindergarten and first grade at Maple Valley Elementary School in Mapleton. He then attended second through fifth grade at Marcus Meridan Cleghorn Elementary School before moving to Elgin. He was currently a senior at Elgin High School. He planned to attend Northwest Community College and major in drafting.

Andrew enjoyed fishing, hunting, tubing, playing catch football, poker and Play Station 2 with his friends. He also enjoyed watching movies, playing catch and hanging out with his younger brother, Norman. He loved texting, teasing and beating his sister, Tori, at Play Station 2. When Andrew was younger, his favorite things to do were farming, looking at semi trucks, going to auctions and the sale barn and playing checkers with his “buddy”, Grandpa Spaulding.

Andrew always knew when he went to Grandma’s, he would work outside, but he was always ready and willing to help her out and they were the best of friends.

Andrew was the type of friend everyone dreamed of having, and the type of child every parent would have been proud to call their own. He was always the one everyone went to for advice and he was never without a smile. He loved kids and they loved him.

Andrew is survived by his mother, Gina Spaulding of Elgin; his younger brother, Norman Grothe, also of Elgin; his sister Tori Putnam of Rapid City, S.D.; his grandparents, Virgil and Ruth Hesse of Mapleton; his Uncle, Brett (Debbie) Spaulding of Onawa; his aunt, Becky Seunjens of Danbury, Iowa; his aunt, Mona Spaulding of Omaha; 10 cousins; five second cousins; and a very large group of close friends.

Andrew was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Spaulding.
