Mapleton, Iowa—Byron T. Edgington, 84, of Mapleton died Friday, September 21, 2007, at Maple Heights Nursing Home on Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Byron Thomas Edgington was born March 23, 1923, in rural Mapleton, the son of Harlan and Clara (Taylor) Edgington. He graduated with the class of 1940 from Mapleton High School. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 19, 1946.

On July 27, 1947, he was united in marriage to Florence Callaghan in German City, Iowa. The couple farmed until his retirement in 1974. They continued to live on the farm until 1981, when they moved to their home in Mapleton. Florence died Nov. 15, 2004.

He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. The couple enjoyed camping and more than 25 years wintering in Texas. He was a 50-year plus member of the Masonic Order and the American Legion. Survivors left to cherish their memories of him include a son and his wife, Don and Pat of Mapleton; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Tom Schleis of Fremont, Nebr; six children, Jason, Channon and Wendy Schleis and Jacob, Halie and Jordon Edgington; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Roberta Edgington and Betty Callaghan, both of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his wife, Florence, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruby; and a brother, Glenn.
