M. Maxine Hamann, age 78, of Mapleton, died Thursday, January 11, 2001, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 15, at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with Pastor Scott Fiege offoviating. Burial was in the Oto Cemetery, Oto, Iowa. Anita Corn was a soloist and Marie Whiteing was the organist and soloist. Music was “The Last Mile of the Way”, “Going Down The Valley” and “In the Garden” A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, followed by The American Legion Auxiliary Service by Henry McKenna Unit #651 of Oto, at the funeral home.

M. Maxine Hamann was born September 2, 1922 in Moville, Iowa, the daughter of George Gilbert and Etta Downing. She attended country school and Moville Public School until March 1937 when she moved with her family to Oto, Iowa, where she graduated with the Oto High School Class of 1940.

On May 11, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harold J. Hamann at Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple farmed near and around Danbury, Anthon and Oto. They later moved into Oto for a time and then to a farm near Mapleton until Harold passed away June 29, 1981. She continued to live in the Mapleton area until poor health forced her to move into the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa, in February 1999.

She enjoyed crocheting and had made many afghans. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Henry McKenna Post # 651 of Oto, Iowa, and served as their President for 14 years.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include one son, Duane Hamann and his wife, Marilyn of Smithland, Iowa; three granddaughters, Tracy Koett and her husband, Brian and Kim Herring, all of Round Rock, Texas and David Herring of Austin, Texas and Jerri Haindfield and her husband, Ryan, of Peoria, Illinois; one grandson, Shawn Hamann and his wife, Ginny of Rodney, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Cory Ping, Laura Herring, Katelynn Deeds, Samantha, Brittany, Troy and Amy Hamann; one brother, Charles Downing of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; three sisters, Lily Ronfeldt of Sioux City, Iowa, Emma and Ronald Mann of Hoskins, Nebraska, and Anita and Eugene Corn of Fremont, Nebraska; two brothers-in-law, Alfred Heinse of Sioux City, Iowa and Virgil Smith of Akron, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews, neighbors and good friends.

Those preceding her in death are her husband, her parents, two brothers, one in infancy and Roy Downing, four sisters, Frances Heinse, Georgetta Prescott, Mary Smith, and Marguerite Lesner, and two brothers-in-law, two nephews, and two nieces.

Pallbearers were Dennis Smith, Mike Downing, Dr. Shane Pedersen, Jason Corn, John Fossum and Jim Passyka.
