Age 96 of Mapleton, Iowa

Joseph L. Bollig, age 96, of Mapleton died Friday, January 19, 2001, at Maple Heights Nursing Home, Mapleton.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 22, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton. A vigil wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Joseph Leo Bollig was born February 2, 1904, in northwest Liston Township near Danbury, Iowa, the son of Matthew Joseph and Mary (Wise) Bollig. He was the youngest of seven children. He lived his entire life in the Danbury and Mapleton, Iowa, communities where he grew up and was educated. He started farming in 1926 and continued to do so until 1947. He then drove a gravel truck for over 20 years retiring in 1969. For 20 years he worked at McNear Oil Company in Mapleton in his spare time.

On February 10, 1931, Joe was united in marriage to Rachel Catherine Livermore at Oto, Iowa. She died April 20, 1986. He entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton April 15, 1991.

Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton and the Mapleton Senior Citizens.

Those survivors left to cherish Joe’s memory include one daughter and her husband, Millie and William Kisting of Lawton, Iowa; one son, Leo Bollig of Sioux City, Iowa; one foster daughter and her husband, Rose Mary and Douglas Schwieso of Marona, Arizona; 11 grandchildren; one step granddaughter; 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, along with several other relatives and friends.

Along with his wife, Joe was prededed in death by his parents, two grandchildren, Joey Dean Schwieso and Tony Schwieso, four brothers, George, William, Ben and Charles, and two sisters, Mary Johnk and Bertha Kueny.

Honorary pallbearers were Loren Brenner, Allan Schrunk, Clair Welte, Delmond Scheer, Wilbur McNear and Mike Goslin.

Pallbearers were Don Bollig, Gene Bollig. Tyler Bollig, Kirk Bollig, Galen Bollig and Trent Bollig.
