Vesta Mabel Melby, 90, Soldier, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at Burgess Health Center at Onawa.
Vesta was born May 29, 1912 at North Grove near Dunlap, the daughter of William and Dora (Pedersen) Price. She attended school at Fester School in rural Soldier.
She married Arnold Melby June 28, 1933. The couple farmed in Mapleton and Soldier areas until retiring to Soldier in 1979. The past two years Vesta was at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, Women of ELCA and was also a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include her husband, Arnold of Soldier; two sons and their wives, Virgil and Janet Ehlers of Soldier
and Duane and Myrna Melby of Dunlap and a daughter and her husband Sharon and Bill Markey of Los Angeles, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; a sister and her husband Erna and Fidell Wadsworth of Moville, and a brother-in-law, Ed Sammons of North Sioux City, S.D., and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.She was preceded in death by five brothers, Claude, Roy, Earl, Everett, and Howard who died in infancy; three sisters, Grace Wheeler, Edna Sammons and Betty Ulven and a grandson.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2002, at Soldier Lutheran Church with Pastor Jack Torgersen officiating. The congregation sang "Just As I Am" and "How Great Thou Art." Becky Marcum, soloist sang "One Day At A Time" and "Amazing Grace." Gilma Ahlers was organist.
Burial was in Soldier Cemetery. Casket bearers were Bill, Pat and Bobby Melby, Ronald Holt and Jim and Rick Ehlers. Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
Visitation was 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the church.
