Former Resident Buried Here Last Sunday

Funeral Services For John T. Bennett Held At The Christian Church On Sunday

He was at one time Custodian at the Court House—He had Reaching the Age of 83 Years 8 Months and 27 Days

On last Sunday a number of friends and relatives gathered at the Christian church in this city to pay their last respects to a true friend and former townsman, John Thomas Bennett.

Mr. Bennett during his residence in Onawa had gained for himself many friends. He was an ardent church worker and held important positions in the church such as an elder and the chairman of the official board.

His occupation while residing in Onawa was that of custodian of the court house, a position filled ably for a number of years.

John Thomas Bennett was born August 14th, 1859 near Alvin, Vermillion County, Illinois and passed away at a hospital in Ottumwa, Iowa on May 13, 1943 having reached the age of 83 years, 8 months and 27 days.

He had been in fairly good health up until about three weeks before his death when he suffered a severe heart attack from which he seemingly could not recover.

He was married to Mary Alice Phillips at Rossville, Illinois on April 16, 1885, she preceded him in death on December 18, 1936. He leaves to mourn his death one son, Charles and wife of Rock Falls, Illinois, Also three grandchildren, Mrs. Alice Giltner of Batavia, Iowa, Mrs. O.B. Redenbaugh of Storm Lake, Iowa and Charles T Bennett of Midland, Texas: also six great grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.

Mr. Bennett was a charter member of the Christian church at Mapleton where he was most faithful to all duties of the church. Those who attended the funeral here were Mr. and Mrs. A Stephenson, of Rock Falls, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Orvol Redenbaugh and boys of Storm Lake, Iowa: Mrs Redenbaugh being the daughter of Chas Bennett: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mesenbrink of Charter Oak, Iowa: one grandson Chat T Bennett in the air corps was unable to attend. Mrs. Everett Giltner and family, a grand daughter to the deceased was also unable to attend the funeral on account of illness.

The funeral services were conducted from the Christian church on last Sunday afternoon at 2:00 under direction of the Barnard Funeral home. Rev Elston preached the sermon, Mrs. Sylvia Plinske gave comfort in song. She was accompanied by her sister Mrs. Glen Edwards. The pallbearers were Harley Haynes C W. Neal, Gilbert Wirth, John Renolds, Adam Letterl and James Anderson. Burial was made in the family lot in the Onawa Cemetery.
