Pioneer Whiting Lady Was Laid To Rest Last Sunday

Mrs. Robert Cummings of Whiting Passed Away On Wednesday May 19 At Her Home

Funeral Held at Whiting Christian Church Sunday. Mrs. Cummings was the Sister of Mrs. Frank Thorp of Onawa.

Mary Lucinda Farley daughter of Thomas and Lucinda Hedrick Farley was born near Palmyra, Warren County, Iowa on October 24, 1860. She was one of a family of twelve children. She came to Monona County March 10, 1877 and was married to Robert Cummings March 13, 1878. To this union seven children were born all of whom survive except a son who passed away in early childhood.
Sixty five years of happy married life were spent in or near Whiting, Iowa. Having made their permanent home in Whiting in 1928, fifteen years ago.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Robert Cummings: two daughters, Mrs. Luin Woodrich and Mrs. Ethel Dean both of Whiting, Iowa. Four sons Vernon of Nampa, Idaho: Curt of DesMoines, Iowa: John and Alsa, both of Whiting, Iowa, 22 grand children and 21 great grand children honor her memory.

She is survived also by two sisters, Mrs Frank Thorp of Onawa, Iowa and Pheobe Potter of Sioux City, Iowa. Also many other relatives and a host of friends.

She was a member of the Christian church from early in life, first she was a member of the congregation at Lawsing later transferred her membership to the Whiting church. She was a faithful and devoted worker in the church, a great lover of flowers never forgetting to adorn the House of God with her choiest selections.
Her dwelling place on earth was more than a house it was a home: not only for the members of her own family but for all who would enter in.
She was a friend always, but especially in times of distress and sorrow tendering the kindest and most loving service at every opportunity.
Her faith an confidence was in God who never failed her. She had no fear of death but realized for some years that the time could not be far distant and for that inevitable event she waited with hope with confidence and a glad heart as one who was weary at the end of a day of hard toil and desired to lie down and rest. A rest in the bosom of the loving savior that she so much adored.

The funeral services were conducted from the Christian church in Whiting and last Sunday evening with Rev M.C. Miller, the officiating minister. The singers were Gilbert Smith, Mrs. Willard Dahl, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hale. They were accompanied by Mrs. S.T. Skidmore. The pallbearers were Will Woodrich, Tom Hubbard, Earl Anderson, Edward Morton, Riley Huff and Perry Miller. Funeral was under the direction of the Cheney Mortuary of Onawa and burial was made in the Harrison Cemetery near Whiting.
