Leonard L. Davis

Leonard Lyle Davis, Onawa, Iowa, died Thursday, October 27, 1988, at his home of an apparent heart attack. Death came at the age of 67 years, 9 months, 9 days.

He was born January 19, 1921, in Pierson, Iowa, the son of Perry and Maude (Paulin) Davis. He graduated from Correctionville High School in 1939 and attended Westmar College for three years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the U.S. Air Craft Carrier Bunker Hill in the Pacific theater. On June 25, 1944, he married Lorraine Artel at Kasson, Minnesota. The couple lived in various western Iowa communities until moving to Onawa 38 years ago. Leonard was a depot agent for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 17 years and than was a postal letter carrier in Onawa for 17 years, retiring in 1971.

He was a member of the U.C.C.Congregational, Vesper Masonic Lodge #223 A.F. & A.M. and Queen Esther Chapter #222, Order of Eastern Star, all of Onawa and was active with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite Bodies and was a colonel in the Confederate Air Force at Harlingen, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine: one son, James L. Davis of Onawa, and one sister, Elda Porter of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 1988, at the U.C.C. Congregational, Onawa, Iowa with Rev. Louis Aitken officiating. The organist, Mrs. Jack Jordan, played, “How Great Thou Art” and “One Day At A Time.”

Casket bearers were Robert Miller, Robert Stangel, Donald Southwick, Jack Virtue, James Benson, and Roger Blatchford.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa with Flag Presentation by the Monona County V.F.W. Post #2694. Ron Heisterkamp, Commander. The Masonic Graveside Ritual was by Vesper Lodge #223 A.F. & A.M., Onawa, Iowa, Lee Phipps, Worshipful Master.

Arrangements were by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa
