“SOLDIER, Iowa -- Marilla Grace Wingate, 91, of Soldier passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, with Rev. Carla Ingebretsen officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Services in Onawa, Iowa.

Marilla was born Oct. 12, 1912, in rural Dunlap, Iowa, the daughter of Asa and Bessie (Gorham) McDole. She graduated from Soldier High School in 1929, and attended Cedar Falls Teachers School and Iowa State in Ames, where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught at Griffith School near Soldier.

She married Harlow Wingate on June 30, 1932, at Onawa. The couple farmed in the Soldier area where Marilla enjoyed being a homemaker. She was an assistant librarian for 10 years at East Monona Elementary School in Soldier. Harlow passed away in Aug 16, 1990.

She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church and past president of Ladies Aid.

Survivors include two sons, Rolland of Soldier, and Noel and his wife LuAnn of Woodbine, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Leo Dean of Mapleton, Iowa; two grandchildren, Shana and Troy Dean; two step grandchildren, Erik and Emily Sandvold; two great-grandchildren Sydnee and Jada Dean; two sisters, Laura Lawson of Osseo, Minn., and Margaret and her husband, Marion Reimer of Atlantic, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Alice Thoreson of St. Paul, Minn.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wilton McDole; and a sister, Ruth Renz.
