Funeral services for Willard E. Melby were held Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. Rev. Paul Fohs officiated at the 10:30 a.m. services. Organist was Fran Klein and soloist Jerry Baldwin, sang “Amazing Grace” and “On Eagles Wings”. “Jesus Loves Me” was sung by the congregation.

Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap. Honorary bearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket bearers were Roger Melby, David Melby, Wayne Melby, Harold Melby, Royce Melby, Richard Melby. Fouts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Willard E. Melby, 73, of Dunlap died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine.

Willard was born on September 22, 1923 in Willow Township, Monona County, Iowa to parents Adolph and Lena (Evenson) Melby.

October 21, 1944 Willard married Rowana Mae TenEyck in Denison. The couple farmed in the Dunlap-Moorhead area until 1956 at which time Willard went into construction, mainly masonry work. He had helped build St. John Lutheran Church and the new entry way at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap and many other works around the area. Rowana died in 1964 leaving Willard to raise their ten children ranging in age from 4 years old to 18.

Willard was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Connie in 1968; granddaughter, Amy Rae Wingrove in 1977; two brothers, Kenneth and Leonard and one sister, Gilma Burson Kline.

Survivors include his six sons, Roger and his wife Patricia of Woodbine, Harold, David (Elmer) and his wife Janelle, Royce, Wayne (Doc) and his wife Angie and Richard (Rick) and his wife Jean, all of Dunlap; three daughters, Karen and her husband Loren Holtorf of Glendale, Ariz., Marsha and her husband Rick Wingrove and Diane and her husband Dan Heffernan, all of Dunlap; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arnold Melby of Soldier and Dale Melby of Woodbine; four sisters, Mildred Andrews of Onawa, Lorraine Price of Dunlap, Agnes (Earl) Weber of Dunlap and Edna (Leo) Hull of Moorhead.
