Blanche Carter, Well Known Teacher Dies

Amy Blanche Carter, the oldest child of David and Jennie Henderson Carter, was born March 29, 1887 at Glenwood, Iowa but became a part of the Whiting community in 1897.

Following her high school graduation in Whiting in 1903 Blanche taught in Monona County rural schools, then attended Morningside College, graduating there in 1912.

She then continued her teaching career, holding positions as a Latin teacher in the high schools of Vail, Wall Lake, Paton, Radcliffe, Marshalltown and Onawa.

In 1919 Blanche became an instructor in East Junior School of Sioux City continuing in the same system until her retirement from Leeds High School in 1952.

During these years of service she was a source of inspiration and a guide to finer living for hundreds of young people.

Upon her retirement, Blanche came home to become a vital part of the life of the community. She delighted those who knew her with her fine sense of humor and dry wit, her friendly and sympathetic manner, and her loyalty to friends and family.

Blanche, reared in a Christian home as she was, had been a fine Christian lady for years, taking part in the activities of the Christian Church of Whiting of which she was a member and promoting its work in all possible ways.

She also believed in the principles and teachings of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving her chapter as an officer for several years and as Worthy Matron in 1953. Blanche enjoyed the fellowship of friends at her local clubs, Dorcas, Past Matrons and Congenial, and her cheerful presence there will be missed by many friends.

Two sisters, Jocy and Ada, both of Whiting; a brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Carter of Washington, D. C.; a niece, Mrs. Charles Birdsong of Washington, D. C.; cousins Jessie and Helen Henderson of Billings, Montana; Harold Henderson of Sioux City; Edwin and Margaret Carter of Glenwood, Iowa survive the loved one.

Funeral services were conducted by Blanche's pastor and friend, Stanley L. Jones at the Whiting Christian Church on Tuesday, April 1. Mrs. Alice Anderson and Mrs. Nancy Brenden offered comfort to the bereaved with appropriate music.

The casket bearers were Glenn Deyloff, Philip Derr, Shirley Skidmore, Ben Skidmore, Jr., Harold Pratt, and Ervin Mander and burial was in the Whiting Cemetery with the Wood Funeral Home in charge.

(Note: Amy Blanche Carter died 30 Mar 1963.)
