James Reed

On Saturday, December 15, James Reed departed this life at the home of his son L.E. Reed in Maple township, aged 78 years, 8 months and 21 days.

The deceased was born in Vanransler County, New York, March 21, 1828 and was married to Catherine Hill, Dec 20, 1846. He removed from New York to Fulton, Ill. In 1854, and from there to Jackson County, Iowa in 1858. He came to Monona County in 1883, locating on a farm between here and Danbury where he resided until moving to the latter town some six or seven years ago. Of late he and his wife have made their home with their son L.E. Reed, where the last days of a ripe old age were spent in comfort and the contentment which rightly follows a well spent life. Father Reed enjoyed the love and esteem of a wide acquaintanceship, and his kind and gentle ways and noble traits of character are fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He was the father of six children, five of whom with the wife are living. The children are Thom. Reed, Bancroft, Nebraska: Mrs. Wm. Schrader, Anthon: L.E. Reed, Mapleton: Mrs. H. C. Gleason, Lobrville: and Mrs. Ella Williams, Woodbine.

Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from the M.E. church in this city. Rev. O.S. Bryan officiating and the remains laid to rest in Mount Hope Cemetery.
