Daughter Of Mr. And Mrs. Henry Babbe, Committed Suicide By Inhaling Gas On Tuesday Morning

Only Cause For Act Was Ill Health
Got up Out of bed After 7 O’clock in the Morning, Went to an Adjoining Room, Arranged Some Affairs, Turned on the Gas, and Laid Herself on the Bed to Await Death.

Mapleton, Iowa, Oct 27: On Tuesday morning, Miss Mattie Babbe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Babbe, of this place committed suicide by inhaling gas. She was an estimable young lady, thirty years old, with a large acquaintance who sincerely regret her loss. The only thing known that could have thrown her into such melancholy mood, was her health, which had been poor for several years.
It had been her custom to lay in bed in late of mornings. Her mother called at her room at 7 o’clock and found her daughter sleeping and concluded not to disturb her, but at 11 o’clock she returned to the room and found she had left her bed. She opened an adjoining room where she was met by the gas fumes and saw her daughter lying on the bed. She turned off the gass and called a physician, but it was too late, she had then been dead an hour or two.
The parents have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in the tragedy that has overtaken them by the death of their daughter.
