Chester Blackman Is Killed In Auto Accident
Headon Collision Of Auto And Truck Near Mormon Bridge On Wednesday January 5, Took Life Of Mr. BlackmanHis wife is in critical condition at the Council Bluffs Hospital- Funeral services held at Moorhead on Tuesday
Chester Blackman, who recently sold his farm in this county and was going to buy a home in Omaha, Nebr. where his hopes vanished Wed. January 5, when he met his death shortly after his car crashed headon into a truck on an overpass on No. 75, East of the Mormon bridge.
His wife, Mary, 71, has remained in a very critical condition at a Council Bluffs hospital, after 4 hours of surgery.Mr. Blackman was for many years a barber at Moorhead, Ia. Then about five years ago he moved to Omaha and operated a shop in the Barker building at 15th and Farnum Streets.
He returned to Moorhead, purchased a farm and worked it until he sold it a few weeks ago.
Mr. Blackman and his wife started from Moorhead early on Wednesday. Their daughter, Mrs. Stanley Jordan, did not know her parents were planning the journey. Later it was learned that they were to call on a real estate agent in Omaha.
Delbert Powlesson of Omaha, told officers that about 9:20 a.m. he reached the crest of the overpass and saw Blackman’s car approaching in his traffic lane.He said he did not have time to avoid the resulting headon crash. Officers said the Blackman car was passing another car.
Mr. Blackman did of a crushed chest shortly after reaching the hospital.Funeral services for Mr. Blackman 73 were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11th at the Latter-Day Saints church in Omaha and later at the Latter Day Saints church at Moorhead.
Mr. Blackman was born January 24, 1881 at Magnolia, Iowa He married Mary Peterson in 1909. He had resided in Moorhead many years before selling his barber shop and going to Omaha to make his home, after a residence there of several years where he followed his trade, he returned to Monona County and purchased a farm where he made his home until selling it a few weeks ago in preparation of moving back to Omaha.He is survived by his widow, Mary: a daughter, Mrs. Stanley Jordan of Council Bluffs: a sister Mrs. Grace Clakemore of Palo Alto, Calif: and a brother, Clinton of San Francisco, Calif. Burial took place at Moorhead
