James Sumner McDonald, announcement of whose death was made in these columns recently, was nearly 83 years old at the time of his death. He was born in West Meath, Ireland, and came to this country in 1841, settling in the east. He enlisted in the Union army at Altoona, Ill., in 1862, and served actively in the Civil war for three years, and was afterwards appointed quartermaster in the army in which capacity he served until the close of the war. In 1872 he moved to Harrison county and lived there for five years, when he came to Monona county, locating on the farm south of town which he occupied until the time of his death, with the exception of a few months spent in Oklahoma. On September 1, 1878, he was married to Miss Mary Carver. To this union six children were born, five of whom are still living. They are Levi, William and Frank McDonald, of Castana, and Homer and Arden McDonald, of Mountain F(V)iew, Okla. Rev. Hurd, of Moorhead, conducted the funeral services, and interment was made in Belvidere cemetery.--Castana (Iowa) Times.
