Well Known Civic Worker Died Friday

Miss Ruth Gingles, 57, Dies Following An Automobile Accident- Had Been A Resident of County Since Babyhood

She Was Prominent in Civic Affairs of the County- Was a Sister of Dr. Earl E. Gingles of Onawa.

Miss Ruth Gingles suffered fatal injuries when a car she was driving collided with one driven by Lloyd Brown of Onawa, at an intersection of a country road 3 miles northeast of Blencoe on last Friday.

Mr. Brown and his son were not injured, but Mrs. Brown is confined to the Onawa hospital with injuries.

Miss Ruth Inez Gingles, daughter of William W. and Retta Gingles, ws born at Struble, Ia., November 23rd, 1887 and passed away on Friday, December 31st at Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 57 years. She had been a resident of the Castana Community almost all her life.

She graduated from Grinnell collage in 1910 and did graduate work at the University of Colorado receiving an M.A. degree from Columbia University and two years ago attended the summer sessions at Morningside College. She taught school at Humbolt and Moville, Iowa and Boulder, Colorado. She was with the Conde-Nast Publication House in New York for several years, then joined the staff of the Carnegie Foundation there, working in the education field. She returned to be agent for the Home Insurance Company and operated her stock farm near Castana.
She entered into many activities, was active in political affairs of the County and State, a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Onawa, a member of the Onawa Chapter, D.A.R.: a former member of the financial committee of the Monona County Red Cross when she rewrote its constitution: a member of the educational committee for the Seventh District for the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs: County Chairman of the Monona County Tuberculosis Association and arranged for the Jensen family to be the Christmas Seal family for the state Organization. She was a member and active supporter of the Castana Community Church. She carried with her a voting membership card in the American Heart Association and a card signifying that she was a 1954 honorary citizen of Boy’s Town of Omaha, Nebraska.

Survivors include her one brother, Dr. E.E. Gingles of Onawa and many other relatives. She leaves a host of friends in community, county and many states besides her native Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 3rd at 2 p.m. at the Castana Community church with Rev. George Osborne conduring the services. Louise Neubaum of Mapleton sang at the services accompanied by Mrs. Dale Vanderbur.

Bearers were Maurice Jensen, Beecher Lamb, Ned Perrin, John Masters, Fred Hawthorne, Earl Miller.

Mrs. Park Struble and Mrs. Ed Sabatka were in charge of the flowers.

Interment was in the Kennebec Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral home.
