Pioneer Called To Home Beyond
James Martin, Age 90 Years Is Called By Death Friday March 2nd.

Had Been A Resident of Ashton Township and Onawa for A Great Many Years—
Funeral Services Were Held on Sunday, March 4th.

Perhaps Onawa’s oldest citizen passed to his reward on last Friday morning, March 2nd, 1917, when death summoned his after an illness of some time.

Mr. Martin was over 90 years old and had for a great share of those years made his home in Ashton Township and in Onawa. Mr. Martin came to Monona County in September 1879 from Deleware County, this state, and purchased an eighty acre farm in Ashton Township, where he lived for a great many years until 1903 when he and his wife moved to Onawa to make their home.

His birthplace was in Champaign, Ohio, and was born July 11th, 1826. He was the son of George and Mary Martin, who removed from Ohio with their family in 1845, settling in Deleware County, Iowa. This was at the time a territory, and at this place occurred the death of Mr. Martin’s parents. The father was a second cousin of the Confederate, Geo. Martin, and the mother, a near relative to the famous Colonel Robt. E. Lee.

Mr. Martin received his education in the district schools of his native state. He grew to manhood surrounded by the influences of a happy home, and on attaining man’s estate, begin to farming for himself. He was the first postmaster at Ead’s Grove. In the northwester part of Deleware County, at a time where their were only three others in the county, Rockville, Delhl and Colesburg. He there made his home until he came to this county in 1897, settling in Ashton Township.

On July 24th, 1851 Mr. Martin was united in marriage to Mary Ann Le Lacheur, who passed on to the great beyond on October 25th, 1915. To this union was born Wm. H. Martin, of Edgewood, Iowa: D.G. Martin, of Winnebago, Nebr: W.W. Martin, Onawa: Mrs. Jennie Maennel, Of Onawa, and Mrs. Anna Jones, of Carson, Iowa. The children are all living and left to mourn the death of their beloved father.

The funeral services were conducted on Sunday, March 4, and the remains were laid to rest beside his wife in the Onawa Cemetery.

Thus marks the passing of another old settler.
