Rawlings, Horatio James (H.J.)
H.J. RAWLINGS TAKES OWN LIFE

The citizens of this community were saddened and greatly shocked last Saturday noon when it became known that H.J. Rawlings had passed to the great beyond by his own hand. He had not been feeling well and when he did not put in an appearance at the hotel for breakfast and later did not appear for dinner Mr. Jennewein went to his room to awaken him, thinking that he had been asleep, and was taken by surprise to find the lifeless form of Mr. Rawlings on the bed with a revolver at his side. Neighbors heard the shot the night before but they supposed that an auto tire had blown out.

No message was left but it is thought that he had been worrying over ill health.

Horatio James Rawlings was born in Platteville, Wis., March 31, 1862 and died August 30, 1918, at the age of 56 years, 4 months and 30 days.

He with his three brothers drove across the county from Platteville to Monona County, Iowa in 1876, where he has since resided.

He was married to Minnie Wilson, Dec. 7, 1890 and to this union were born four children - Levi, Lula, Edna, and Stanley.

Mr. Rawlings moved from the farm to Moorhead about fifteen years ago and since that time has been a mail carrier on route 2, and in his first twelve years did not miss one day serving his patrons. A record he was always proud of, and three years ago the patrons presented him with a set of new harness showing that they appreciated his efforts in serving them. For a number of years he was proprietor of the Moorhead Hotel.

He united with the Latter Day Saints church in July, 1895. He leaves to mourn his departure, his children, six brothers and two sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the L.D.S. Church, conducted by Elder E.C. Ballantyne, and the remains were laid to rest in the Moorhead cemetery.

We desire to express out thanks to neighbors and friends, who kindly assisted in this our sad bereavment in the death of our loving father and brother.
