Norby, James ~ 1944
James J. Norby, son of Johannes and Sohpie(sic) Harefalet was born at Urskog, Norway on May 6, 1859, and passed away at his home in Soldier on July 18, 1944 at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 12 days. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He emigrated to the United States in the spring of 1881 at the age of 22 years and settled near Soldier, Iowa where he spent his entire life.
He was united in marriage to Amelia Peterson on April 8, 1886. To this union eight children were born, three of whom died in infancy, and one son, Alvin, preceding him in death in 1923. He farmed in the vicinity of Soldier for 38 years after which he retired and moved to Soldier in 1924 and resided here until the time of his death. Mr. Norby had been ailing for several years and had been ill at home since November. In January an operation was performed in Sioux City but, while for a time he seemed improved, he soon grew worse, spending the last six weeks in bed. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, four daughters, Ida Norby, Ella Gerard of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Dagny Lund and Mrs. Mae Rude, both of Moorhead, Iowa; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; his parents and two and three brothers, besides a host of other relatives and friends. The church, too, and the pastor will miss this good and faithful worker who had served in many ways from trustee to janitor—to honor his Lord and Master and to do service to the church of which he was a member. He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services were held in the Soldier Valley Lutheran church last Thursday afternoon, July 20, with the Rev. N. Preus of Onawa giving the sermon. Burial was in Soldier Valley cemetery under the direction of Ralph Oldham.
