John Richard Nichols, son of Charles and Lizzie Nichols, was born October 20, 1887 at Woodbine, Iowa and passed from this life April 8, 1972 at his home in Moorhead at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 19 days.
On February 10, 1909 he was united in marriage to Lule(sic) Josephine Head at Woodbine, Iowa.
They spent their first 11 years on a farm east of Dunlap, then they purchased a farm east of Moorhead and lived there until 1948 when he retired and moved to Moorhead where he spent his remaining years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lulu, in 1946.
In 1947 he was united in marriage to Elma Edwards and she passed away in 1960.
Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by two daughters, Ada Vivian at the age of 2 years and Mrs. Ben (Dena) Carson of Pisgah and 2 infant granddaughters.
Surviving are his children, six sons, Lyle and Carlos of Moorhead; Glen of Mapleton, Merlyn and Russell of Dunlap; Virgil of San Gabriel, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Donna Melby of Dunlap and Mrs. Neil (Maxine) Owens of Cherokee, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Oscar (Grace) Piper of Dunlap; one brother, Jess Nichols of Woodbine; 21 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, many relative and a host of friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, 1972 at the Christian Church in Moorhead with the Rev. M. Dwight Walker officiating. Mrs. Don Soldber(sic) and Mrs. Ione Johnson sang, “In The Garden” and “Going Down The Valley” accompanied by Mrs. Wayne Outhouse. Bearers were Wilbur Skow, Charles Sorenson, Leo Hull, Vernon Christensen, Richard Determan and Jerry Yanak. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap, with the Pearson Funeral Home of Soldier, Iowa in charge of arrangements.
