Glen Wilbur Nichols, the son of John and Lulu (Head) Nichols was born February 24, 1921 at Moorhead, Iowa. Glen grew up and lived in the Moorhead community. He went to the aid of his country serving in the US Air Force during World War II serving 3-1/2 years overseas.
He was united in marriage to Arlene Ulmer on November 7, 1942 at Logan, Iowa. After the service he returned to the Dunlap community where the couple farmed for 9 years. In 1958 Glen and his family moved to a farm near Mapleton. In 1976 the couple moved into Mapleton. Besides farming Glen owned and operated Nicks Tap at Moorhead for 8 years. Glen was a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church and the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 both of Mapleton.
Glen died on Saturday, February 7, 1981 of an apparent heart attack while vacationing in Phoeniz(sic), Ariz. having attained the age of 59 years, 11 months, and 13 days.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Arlene of Mapleton, one son, Rick also of Mapleton, one daughter Glenda, Mrs. Donald Muckey of Sioux City, three grandchildren, two brother, Merlyn of Dunlap and Virgil of San Gabriel, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Donna Melby of Dunlap and Mrs. Neil (Maxine) Owens of Cherokee, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Nichols was laid to rest in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Dunlap, on February 10, 1981.
Services were held Tuesday, February 10 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church at Mapleton, Iowa with Pastor Louis Aitken officiating. Mrs. Marie Whiteing(sic) was organist. Pallbearers were Larry, Paul, Steve, and Allen Nichols, Terry Hall and Marvin Ulmer. Walter Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of arrangements.
