Monona County History
1982Merrill Arden Amunson, p 90
Merrill Arden Amunson, son of Olaf and Hanora (Clemon) Amunson was born on September 29 1907 at the farm home East of Soldier in Monona County, Soldier Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Soldier, and graduated from the eighth grade country school and Soldier High School in 1926, and took some courses in mechanics.
He helped his father with farm work and threshing for neighbors, then was maintainer man for Monona County, then as Mechanic at the Carlson hardware in Soldier. He entered the Army in 1942 and was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. After his honorable discharged he returned to work at the Hardware store. He died of a coronary heart attack.
Merrill was a very well like citizen, always doing his job, and was an uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was also a friend to all the children in the Soldier Community, passing out nickels for treats to many. He was known for miles around to his many friends and relatives as ‘Hobbin’, a nickname given to him in high school.
He loved to hunt and fish as his relaxation. One extra job he took upon himself was to always put the American Flag on the Soldier Flag Pole, whenever any of his fellow comrades died. In tribute to this position Merrill’s brothers and sisters presented his flag, which was presented them by the American Legion at his military funeral, back to the American Legion Post No. 462, of which Merrill was a member and a honorary 25 years member the year of 1967.
Merrill lived with his parents all his life, besides his parents, he had five brothers, Lowell, Kermit, Clifferd, Leo and Milton, and four sisters, Verona, Evelyn, Elaine and Loreen, several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews, aunts, and uncles.
He died of a coronary heart attack on December 28, 1967 and was buried in the Soldier Lutheran Church cemetery with Military Services. He was missed by his families and those who needed him for his mechanic abilities. Submitted by: a sister Elaine Schillenberg.
