Kermit and Clara Amunson, p 89

Kermit Oscar Amunson, the son of Olaf and HaNora (Clemon) Amunson, was born on September 10, 1914, on a farm near Soldier, Iowa. He was the fifth child in a family of ten children. Kermit was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and graduated from the Soldier High School in 1933. He served his country in the U.S. Army from May 7, 1942-Oct. 15, 1945, having achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant. While in the Amy, he served as a mechanic, and during W.W.II he was in such European countries as England, Belgium, France and Germany. Before going overseas, Kermit met a young lady from Ute by the name of Clara Johanna Bartels. Clara, the daughter of William and Alma (Mohr) Bartels, was born on September 9, 1922 on a farm near Ute. Clara was the third child in a family of four children. She graduated from the Eighth Grade in 1936, and was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church that same year. She had numerous jobs working in various homes throughout the community, and also was employed at the Council Oak Store in Denison for some time.

Kermit and Clara were united in marriage on August 22, 1943 at Muskogee, Oklahoma. God blessed this union with five children: Kenneth Lee, born July 8, 1944; Carolyn Anne, born May 27, 1947; Ronald Sherman, born August 8, 1950; Lynette Marie, born Sept. 15, 1951; and Leann Shari, born Dec. 12, 1962. Their first child was born while Kermit was still overseas, and in fact, Kermit didn’t meet his new son until Kenneth was fifteen months old. After being discharged from the Army at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, Kermit and his new family resided briefly near Soldier, and in 1946 they moved to a farm 3 ½ miles southeast of Ute, which was then owned by Chris Gregerson. They have since bought the farm, and continued to live there to this day.

Their oldest son, Kenneth, married Bette Stevenson of Blencoe in 1963, and they have three daughters; Lori Ann, Lana Jean, and Shari Lynn. Their daughter Carolyn married Bruce Yockey of Sioux City in 1966, and they have two sons, Troy Anthony and Jason Andrew. Their son Ronald served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1972, and is currently engaged in farming. Their daughter Lynette married Harvey Thies of Ute in 1973, and they have two daughters, Heidi Marie and Angela Dawn. Their youngest daughter Leann graduated from high School in 1981, and attended the Spencer School of Business, in Spencer, Iowa.
